For my first post I read the article "What is a Learning Management System" by Alexandra Toedt.
Basically a Learning Management System or LMS is used to not only present content in a virtual environment like the Internet, but is can be used to also create content. In addition to content creation and presentation an LMS can be used to assess learners as well as used as a communication devise between the learners and the instructor.
There are two types of LMSs that are used. A component approach and an integrated approach. The component approach used several different systems allow the content to be created using a separate system. While the integrated approach has all aspects of the LMS in one system.

Hi, Q.
ReplyDeleteSo many acronyms, so little time. Thanks for your entry. It seems we are just scratching the surface while sorting through all of the learning environments we are being exposed to in the EMDT program. Glad you were able to make some sense of it.
Q,
ReplyDeleteI am amazed at the many different ways LMS can be used. I agree with Jeinine that is seems like we are just scratching the surface in what we have been exposed to in the EMDT program. I am looking forward to spending more time utilizing my time to integrate more virtual learning in my classroom. Thanks for your interpretation of what LMS really is.
Thanks for breaking the definition of LMS into layman's terms! I suppose we all had a little taste of how to create a LMS in our Education Design and Evaluation class in month 4 when we had to break into groups and create education design modules. It truly was a learning experience to share files in google docs to create a cohesive site.
ReplyDeleteAs the LMS environment is used more, it will be demystified. Your layman's approach is a good starting point for someone who's a novice and is eager to get a simple understanding. More to come, I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteQ,
ReplyDeleteThorough yet succinct distillation of LMSs. Just from my own experience in working with enterprise-wide collaboration software, such as Sharepoint, which has many similarities to LMSs, I am inclined to opine that the future of LMS will rest on the component approach. I say this because as history has proved with regard to technology solutions, I do not believe we will ever see the day when one solution will be the panacea to everyone’s pain points.
Q, this really lays out this article in simple terms. I wish there were some readability standards for scholarly writing. After conducting some research this week I have found many articles that seem to be more about a person demonstrating a expansive vocabulary than clear communication. If a person needs to look up five words per sentence perhaps the scholar should work on more effective word choice.
ReplyDeletePerhaps we can start here in this course by writing for ease of understanding rather than announcing our ability to use obscure words.
I appreciate your readability in your posts, it makes me want to come back and read some more because it is easy to understand.
Thank you very much Q.
Q it was nice that you relayed that LMS systems can be used to create content and convey content unlike some of the other systems that we are learning about. There are so many different systems to keep strait it is always nice to have complete but concise descriptions of them.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I am not a big fan of my writing or writing in general. So, thank you for the encouragement and comments.
ReplyDeleteCheers,

Q,
ReplyDeleteI too appreciated the reader friendly summary of LMS. It's nice to read entries that are precise and in terms that even the most novice can understand. This helps when I'm reading them in the wee hours of the night:-). It has been an amazing journey via our own LMS..FSO. I'm sure we haven't heard or read the last of the acronyms pertaining to LMSs. Eagerly awaiting to read your interpretations.
