Week3-Reading-CMSDirections

(Image of AXIOM, from the movie Wall-E by Disney Pictures)

In this weeks reading I decided to take a look at what the future may hold for LMS/CMS. The great part about this is we can speculate all we want. There are some great things to come based on the readings and some of the trends that researchers are looking.

These trends include Web 2.0, mobile learning and the expansion of distance learning. Web 2.0 has definitely grown and gotten better as we have been learning in this EMDT program. This blog is one example of Web 2.0 technologies. Blogs can be used to educate people and can also be used to share refections based on readings. With the growth of mobile technology and having hand held devices learning complex ideas can become even more ubiquitous. Learning happens everyday, it can happen anytime and anywhere. However the use of technology can make it easier to learn in a verity of ways. The idea of mobile technology will just assist with the expansion of distance learning. It is an exciting time.

I do have a fear as to how dependent we become on technology to learn. Technology is just a tool and interactions with other humans is vital. I hope the future does not turn out like it did for all the humans on the AXIOM ship in the movie Wall-E. All they did was stair at screens with no real interactions, that can't be good for the human spirit, right!

  1. Hi, Q.
You are right - it is an exciting time. It sometimes is overwhelming to think of all the possibilities in learning through/with technology. Does this now mean that we are without excuse to learn? Then why are so many people practicing dumb actions?!

I, too, share your same concerns about becoming dependent on technology. I have a love/hate relationship with my ipod touch that happens to have a few episodes of my daughter's favorite shows. I use it as a "tool" to get her into the car seat, because it works!

I strongly agree with your statement: interactions with other humans IS vital. And so is the human touch. You can hold your cell phone all you want, but it doesn't have the same warmth as another person's hand.

  2. Q,
This is an amazing time as a professional in education. I have found as a teacher of 5th graders to embrace that they may know more about a Web 2.0 tool or a software program than I do. My job is to help my students expand their knowledge utilizing these tools. The advancement within Web 2.0 tools is changing quickly and it is my endeavor to be sure there is still human contact and interaction with student/teacher relationship. Some things cannot be taught by technology…successful human interaction is vital for happiness☺.

P.S. Love the visual, I know it is from Wall-E but it reminds me of a spaceship from Star Wars.

  3. awesome observation. there are those who do not understand the intrinsic "human" nature to education and undervalue the teacher-student/student-student connections that typify excellent education. so, as we add more technology to the equation, it's up to us to teach them what is needed.
