I personally found this weeks reading rather fascinating. It was somewhat validating as well. I have always been a big fan of the saying "Fake it till you make it." This idea and saying seems to work hand in hand with chapter 1 in the book The Art of Possibility titled It's All Invented. I know I have been guilty of holding myself back and believing there are boundaries. That is one of the reasons why I don't like to write. I don't think or feel I am good writer and I tend to limit myself because for these assumptions.
In the second chapter the authors share the idea of Stepping Into A Universe of Possibility. The idea of fear and the lack of abundance is shared in this chapter. The whole mentality that we have of measuring is expressed in this chapter and how we tend not to see that bigger picture due to limiting ourselves based on not only our assumptions but what we hear and see around us based on all these ways of measure what is out there.
In the third chapter, Giving An A, Ben and Roz and Ben start to introduce the idea of really making a paradigm shift. They suggest that we should being judging based on comparisons but based on standard that everyone can achieve. I have never been a fan of grades and could really care less if I get an A. But that paradigm was created due to other reasons. School was a challenge for me all my life I had trouble fitting into the mold during school and it was not until I got to college did I really start to shine. I was able to take what classes I wanted and for the reasons I wanted to. There were still classes I had to take as it was required but I didn't do well in those. In addition I was diagnosed with a learning disability. I did not let that label hold me back or change me. It just added to additional knowledge to my world. What it really did was give me hope, I mean I made it to college despite all the odds. The idea of saying everyone is worthy holds a lot of value and it is unfortunate that we have to measure kids and condition them to try and get that A. Maybe someday we can let everyone know they are worthy of any standard they choose to follow.
Q,
ReplyDeleteGood examples from the reading and relating them to personal impact. Chapter 2 validated for me also the way we hold ourselves back based on our environment. I made a glog about Glogster last year and on it I comment that "You are only limited by your creativity or NOT" and wonder how many people actually "get" the meaning behind what I am saying. Measure is a scary thing sometimes especially when you really stop and think, as this chapter makes you do.
Q,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog. Chapter 3 happens to be my favorite. The passion to "just be" isn't as high as the passion to excel and be viewed well by others. The book really captures this and your summary is a great compliment. We're all worthy so we have to make others see that as well!
Q,
ReplyDeleteI think fear and lack of abundance is so ingrained in our society. Even for those who recognize this is merely a reality based on perception; it is SO easy to fall back into that reality from time to time because it can be difficult to rise above the mass of negative energy. I find this the most challenging concept for me personally to practice in my life. Great insights.
Very interesting take on the connect the dots problem. Purests might protest because your "lines" aren't liness because they're not straight and you're bending them so that the bottom row connects to the second row when it appears on the other side of the can. Ingenious, but a bit skewed.
