MAC-Week4-this week's project

For this weeks free choice blog post I would like to share my thoughts on the leadership project.

Let's be honest here. I don't know if I will be thinking about my AR project once I am done with obtaining my degree.

However now that I am required to try and find a conference to present my materials I am a bit more inclined to think about it beyond graduation in November. I think it is a great idea to have us peruse finding a way to present our research via a journal or a conference. I think there is something valuable that was gathered by us all and does need to be shared.

So thank you for the little push and for "making" us look at ourselves as leaders who have something to share.

Here are my comments that I made of Collette's very touching blog post this week.

Collette,

Thank you for sharing the story of you and your students trying to deal with such a loss. It sounds like you went beyond creating a framework for you and your students. By sharing this on your post I believe you just Told a WE story for us all. Life is short and we ned to understand that. I think you are a great teacher and am with the dad.... Thank you for everything you have done for him and his son!

Here are my comment that I left for Eric on his blog for the reading this week.

Eric,

Nice summary of the chapters we read. I must commend you for trying to apply Rule # 6. I love this idea and concept. I tend to agree it is hard to keep it in mind through out the day. If we can keep the rule in mind I think it makes for a more peaceful existence and allows us to be more present and available to those around us. Nice work my friend.

MAC-Week4-Reading - change the way you see things

In this weeks reading we finished off the last three chapters in the book "The Art Of Possibility"

These last three practices are: 'Being the board', 'Creating frameworks for possibility' and ' Telling the we story'. Below are my thought on the last three chapters.

Being The Board
For this practice the idea of changing our perspective to see “yourself” as the playing surface as to which the game of living is played. We need to be willing to declare that, I am the composition of everything that happens in my life. Another way of looking at it is being fully present without blame, shame or hurt. Being the board is about defining the experiences of your surrounding and not saying you are the center of the universe. If you do think you are the center of the universe the authors would suggest prescribing a heavy dose of Rule # 6. Seeing yourself as the board will help with seeing more and more of your relationships as partnerships. You will want to be more engaged and in the moment with people if you are changing your perspective.

Creating Frameworks For Possibility
The idea and concepts in this chapter are about finding ways to build and establish frameworks that allow you to see the difference possibilities available to us. I like to think of these frameworks as the foundation or the architectural drawings to move us forward. It is up to us to create the foundation of the drawings to see the different possibilities that are not attached to the downward spiral. Another way of thinking about it is in order to see yourself as the board in the game you need to create the idea of the game and that is what the framework is.

Telling the WE Story
The thought process behind the idea of ‘Telling the WE story’ goes beyond just looking at what are our similarities as human entities. It is more about discovering what our common story is so we can see and live the possibilities. It is the capstone of integrating all the practices shared in the book. It is also about the passion of sharing the WE story, not just going through the motions of telling story but truly feeling the story of WE from within.

MAC-Week4-Leadership Project post 3

This presentation was created as part of my Action Research project conducted for my Education Media Design and Technology Masters program.

The project was to find out is 21st century tools could be used to teach the 21st century skill of project management.

Link to initial draft for the presentation:

Second draft after receiving feedback from peers and professor.

MAC-Week4-Leadership Project post 2

Why did I choose the two conferences I picked?

I thought it would be helpful to educate my fellow peers about the idea of passing on our knowledge to the younger generation. The skill set of project management is something I feel everyone can benefit from. I believe it would also benefit the youth and my fellow project management peers to work together more. There is a wealth of knowledge that can be past on to the teens and young adults.

By presenting my AR project as a case study I can show my fellow peers that we can teach project management to teens. I can also show them that we don't have to be there in person to teach the skills that we sometime may take for granted.

MAC-Week4-Leadership Project post 1

I have been thinking about where I plan on presenting my AR project. I think will present it as a case study to my fellow project management community.

Based on the idea of presenting it as a case study I will try to submit the research to the local Project Management Institute (PMI) Chapter as well as the Global association.

The local PMI chapter hosts a yearly symposium in the Spring. I have presented at this symposium in the past and am looking forward to an opportunity to present again.

The idea of presenting at the Global level may be more of a challenge. However it doesn't hurt to try. The PMI Global Congress for 2010 just occurred this month. I will have to check the website to see when they are accepting papers for the 2011 congress.

MAC-Week3-this week's project

This week's project was all about creating our abstract for the AR project we have been working on.

I am not sure if I found this weeks project to be a challenge or not. As I have shared time and time agin in this program I am not a fan of writing. Writing has been a challenge for me all my life. I am know I am an evolving writer and the more I do it the better I get. Plus I try to work with people willing to help me out so I can learn the all the proper grammar and structure to writing. I guess what I am really saying is I like the idea of being brief when I can. Although it is difficult to sum up an entire project in 120 words, I guess I pulled it off this week.

Eric,

Nice work on the visuals this week. I agree I think the diagram does share a lot and makes a ton of sense. Nice work on the summary of this weeks reading. I think you captured it well and pulled out some wonderful elements. Thanks my friend.

What a wonderful story about allow your students engage in the moment and for also allowing them to wholly participate. I think our very own governmental elections would be more enjoyable and fun if candidates sang their speeches. I would be like living in a musical or in Glee!.

MAC-Week3-Reading - willingness is important

This weeks reading in from the book “The Art of Possibility” covered chapters 7-9. The 3 practices covered in these three chapters were: ‘The Way Things Are’, Giving Way To Passion’ & ‘Lighting A Spark’.

Chapter 7, The Way Things Are, was mainly about the idea of where you go from here. One of the key aspects that I picked up was, being present without resistance = possibility and mistakes are good. These concepts are grand ideas that work well. I have always been a fan of making mistakes, not on purpose, because I tend learn a lot more when things didn’t go the way I anticipated. I also loved the line “Nature makes not Judgment. Humans do.” As well as the importance of “distinguish between talk in the downward spiral and conversations for possibility.” I felt as though these are key concepts that I hope I don’t let go of.

Chapter 8, Giving Way To Passion, the beginning of trying to use some of the earlier practices and combining them find more joy in our lives. At least that is what I got from it. There were to key steps to keep in mind for the practice of giving way to passion. Step one is to find out where we are holding back and then let go. Step two is to participate fully or wholly (need to have the willingness to do this). Yoda was wrong, when he said “Do or Do Not there is No Try” We need to try and fully participate and have the willingness to allow ourselves to be part of what is happening in the moment. Don’t be afraid of making a mistake it’s the way things are. I believe these two steps will help us find our way to passion based on the great examples given in the reading.

Chapter 9, Lighting a spark, is all about the idea of enrolling. As it stated in the book, “Enrollment is the art and practice of generating a spark of possibility for others to share.” The idea of sharing a moment is appealing to me. I feel it would make us much happier if we were more willing to just be in the moment no matter who is around us. The four steps to this practice are: “1) Imagine that people are an invitation for enrollment. 2) Stand ready to participate, willing to be moved and inspired. 3) Offer that which lights you up. 4) Have no doubt that others are eager to catch the spark.” I liked how the chapter was completed with the comparison of enrollment to the life force for humankind. It is true enrollment is that spark that allows us to connect, communicate and express with each other.

MAC-Week2-this week's project

This weeks big project was working on completing our AR website. I am not going to lie it was tough work getting everything up on the web to discuss my research. I am also getting extreme excited about finishing up the las few touches on the research. I can't to put this stuff on the self once my EMDT program is over. I love project management but I am not a researcher. I am not built for it. I like doing and learning from others but I am not sure I like creating all the work to support the research. I know it is needed for degree programs so I am willing to get the work done. But if I don't have to I wont do it for fun.

In addition I love the area of project management and teaching about it. I think the research I had to do showed me that there is still a lot of people out there that don't know about the art and science of project management. So I hope I can share it my love and interest with the world as time goes on.

MAC-Week2-Reading - time to change some of your thought processes

This week we took on chapters 4-6 in the book “The Art of Possibility. “ Below you will find my thoughts on this weeks reading.

Chapter 4 was all about the game of contribution. This is a great thought process basically not being a perfectionist. In a sense it is saying look at the world a little differently by seeing yourself as a contributor to the world and not having to achieve some big huge spectacular goal. What was also nice is how they gave us two simple steps to play the game of contribution:

“The steps to the practice are these:

1. Declare yourself to be a contribution.

2. Throw yourself into life as someone who makes a difference, accepting that you may not understand how or why.”

Chapter 5 is all about how we can all be leaders and allowing yourself to see others as leaders. The concept is “Leading from any chair.” While teaching leadership class I have taught that we spend too much time teaching what we find in the books and theory of leading and not enough time on the people we never hear about. The single mother of 3 giving every thing she has to keep her family in a house. The 12-year old entrepreneur starting his business as a pooper-scooper so he can save money to start investing his money for his future. Or the teachers aid willing to go from room to room to work with children and share his years of knowledge and how he applied what he learned in school as a plumber and a Vietnam Veteran. I love the idea of seeing everyone as a leader. It is a noble thought process that allows everyone to see himself or herself in a different light.

Conveniently chapter six is about “Rule #6”. This works out to be don’t take yourself so serous. Be willing to have fun and bring laughter in to what you do. I don’t really get it. I think fun is way overrated!!! I think the world and life would be so much better if people were more serious and just gave in to the world of calculations. Okay, I can’t go on! I don’t think we have enough fun in our lives I have worked in way too many environments that take themselves way too serious. Life is wonderful and I love living my life. But I don’t feel that enough people know how to have fun from day to day or moment to moment.

MAC-Week1-Free Choice

Image taken (screenshot) from fullsail.edu EMDT page

For my free choice I wanted to try and just find my voice a little bit and express my thoughts on the class so far and the EMDT program as whole.

Week of MAC is looking good. I think I am a fan of the format and look forward to learning more about media assets and how to mange them.

As for the program as a whole there have been some great classes but others have not been as impressive to me. The program is meeting my needs and what is so great is I have not had any expectation. You see I don't believe in expectations. I have the following philosophy, "Expectations kill passion." So I have the intention to learn new things and to enjoy the class. Plus I intended to meet meet new people and form bonds that will last a long time after school is over. I believe I have done that so far and I hope to continue these last few months.

Plus this has been my first experience with online learning and I think there is a real future in it!

    Jeinine,

Thank you for sharing the videos with us. I too am with you. Our journey continues. I guess the only real difference I see is I don't think it ever ends, even when our maker comes.

I also appreciated the questions that Zander and Zander wrote. Many times I have asked those very questions but I did not use those exact word. In the world of information technology and teaching people how to troubleshoot you have to let go of assumptions.

MAC-Week1-Reading- fake it till you make it

I personally found this weeks reading rather fascinating. It was somewhat validating as well. I have always been a big fan of the saying "Fake it till you make it." This idea and saying seems to work hand in hand with chapter 1 in the book The Art of Possibility titled It's All Invented. I know I have been guilty of holding myself back and believing there are boundaries. That is one of the reasons why I don't like to write. I don't think or feel I am good writer and I tend to limit myself because for these assumptions.

In the second chapter the authors share the idea of Stepping Into A Universe of Possibility. The idea of fear and the lack of abundance is shared in this chapter. The whole mentality that we have of measuring is expressed in this chapter and how we tend not to see that bigger picture due to limiting ourselves based on not only our assumptions but what we hear and see around us based on all these ways of measure what is out there.

In the third chapter, Giving An A, Ben and Roz and Ben start to introduce the idea of really making a paradigm shift. They suggest that we should being judging based on comparisons but based on standard that everyone can achieve. I have never been a fan of grades and could really care less if I get an A. But that paradigm was created due to other reasons. School was a challenge for me all my life I had trouble fitting into the mold during school and it was not until I got to college did I really start to shine. I was able to take what classes I wanted and for the reasons I wanted to. There were still classes I had to take as it was required but I didn't do well in those. In addition I was diagnosed with a learning disability. I did not let that label hold me back or change me. It just added to additional knowledge to my world. What it really did was give me hope, I mean I made it to college despite all the odds. The idea of saying everyone is worthy holds a lot of value and it is unfortunate that we have to measure kids and condition them to try and get that A. Maybe someday we can let everyone know they are worthy of any standard they choose to follow.

    Week4-FutureProject

There is a lot of different research out there that talks about the future of LMS/CMSs. Based on my opinions alone what I think LMS/CMSs are missing holodecks like what you we use to see on Star Trek. Granted this something we will not see in the near future but I sure wish it were.

Nice work on your Udutu project. For not liking the application you did a wonderful job. I do understand not liking the application. In the begging I struggled with the user interface as well.

    Week 4_Final Project
The beginning of my experience with udutu was nothing but negative. Being used to many complicated programs that can allow many tasks at once, with customization at the fingertips, I was nothing but disappointed. The videos did not load (there is no loading bar to show progress). I had to have live consultation with my classmates. I discovered that they also struggled with many issues I had and were willing to share many great tips with me.

Nice job on the Udutu project Monika.

I think it turned out great. I am glad that for the most part it was a pleasant experience vs a completely negative one. I do get your point about the progress bar and having a better user interface. Compared to most applications produce by Adobe Udutu has a lot to be desired.

Maybe someday in the future you can work with a different content creator application that is more intuitive.

    Laura,

I feel your pain. The user interface for Udutu has a lot to be desired. Why is it if I want to delete a slide I have to type the word DELETE all caps a second time. Just give me a confirmation window asking if I am sure I want to delete.

I also understand your issues with the video. It would be nice if Udutu had a progress window letting the user know how long the upload will take.

For a free application that is web based I shouldn't complain too much. Your lesson turned out great overall. It was a nice demonstration of what the application is capable of. Maybe at some point you can can figure out the video issue so the lesson could be used. But I get that you want to avoid anything that is onerous.

    week4-Udutu-Project

This week we were to work on the Udutu project that was proposed in week 2. I found Udutu to be a great authoring tool that has some good templates to get a course designer started. The navigation and instructions could use some more development. Like a progress bar letting me know my media files are being uploaded and how much longer it will take. It would also be be nice not to have to type the word delete in all caps when I want to delete a page in the lesson I am creating. However for a free tool I think this works well and I really don't have a lot of issue with it.

Check out the lesson I create and see what you think of this tools. Feel free to leave a comment or two and tell me what you think of the lesson or letting me know your thoughts on Udutu.

This lesson was the first video I created for my AR project out of 3. I chopped up the video and put them on different slides. I included some interactive buttons for the learners as well to go with the videos. In addition I added an assessment at the end of the lesson to check the learns understanding.

Nice work on summing it all up Collette. You did a fine job of giving examples of possibilities for CMS's. I too think this is great stuff and can assist us as facilitators to help people learn. What I did find interesting is how the reading has so many different directions, which makes it very exciting.

    Week3-Reading-CMSDirections

(Image of AXIOM, from the movie Wall-E by Disney Pictures)

In this weeks reading I decided to take a look at what the future may hold for LMS/CMS. The great part about this is we can speculate all we want. There are some great things to come based on the readings and some of the trends that researchers are looking.

These trends include Web 2.0, mobile learning and the expansion of distance learning. Web 2.0 has definitely grown and gotten better as we have been learning in this EMDT program. This blog is one example of Web 2.0 technologies. Blogs can be used to educate people and can also be used to share refections based on readings. With the growth of mobile technology and having hand held devices learning complex ideas can become even more ubiquitous. Learning happens everyday, it can happen anytime and anywhere. However the use of technology can make it easier to learn in a verity of ways. The idea of mobile technology will just assist with the expansion of distance learning. It is an exciting time.

I do have a fear as to how dependent we become on technology to learn. Technology is just a tool and interactions with other humans is vital. I hope the future does not turn out like it did for all the humans on the AXIOM ship in the movie Wall-E. All they did was stair at screens with no real interactions, that can't be good for the human spirit, right!

From Abby's blog post on week 2's reading:
SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It was created to fix a couple basic flaws were found in LMS and web based learning systems. The first flaw was that many web-based programs do not really provide a great environment or system for learning. They are limited in what they can accomplish and they depth of instruction that they can achieve. The second is after content was designed it was generally not transferable between systems or even sometimes when systems were updated. SCORM allows content that has been designed as SCORM compatible to be used in a wide variety of different systems.

    My comments:
    Abby,

Thanks for sharing the basics with us. As government consultant I totally appreciate the fact that SCORM is in place. There are several times a year I have to take on-line training and the idea of having SCORM as a standard is very helpful when it comes to making the training consistent and reliable.

    Week2-Reading-CostOfLMSVsCMS

This weeks reading - The cost of an LMS VS. CMS

As outlined in some of the reading and the mind map from last week it was outlined that an LMS is a Learning Management System and a CMS is a Course Management System. LMSs are used primarily in corporate organizations while CMS were developed and are used in academic environments (i.e. universities and high schools).

Based on this weeks reading these systems can cost a lot of money it all depends on the approach you take. Plus money is relative, for a small school district in rural Colorado $100,000.00 could be the entire budget for one school while in a more populated area that same amount of money could be one department budget. The same goes for business world $500,000.00 could be the entire annual operating budget for a small company while the same amount could be the monthly budget for the janitorial department of a larger company.

Bottom-line of the articles read this week is, do your homework. First make the decision if you are going to buy or build. Part of that decision process includes an full cost analysis. As part of the cost analysis be sure to look not only the cost of implementation, but also the cost of maintenance. In the article "Measuring the Total Cost of e-Learning" Kevin Kruse outlines a five step process of completing a thorough cost analysis. The five step process includes a review of, development, implementation and maintenance costs.

    LMS-Wk1-blog-entry1-Reading-WhatIsAnLMS

For my first post I read the article "What is a Learning Management System" by Alexandra Toedt.

Basically a Learning Management System or LMS is used to not only present content in a virtual environment like the Internet, but is can be used to also create content. In addition to content creation and presentation an LMS can be used to assess learners as well as used as a communication devise between the learners and the instructor.

There are two types of LMSs that are used. A component approach and an integrated approach. The component approach used several different systems allow the content to be created using a separate system. While the integrated approach has all aspects of the LMS in one system.

Okay so as it has been stated many times we need to be looking for tools that we can use in our current work environment. I found a tool for fun that I plan on using for my weekly Netcast/Podcast (called "Entertainment for the Rest of Us" for those of you may have forgotten or didn't know). I found a tool that we can create our own movies and embed them on our blog or even play them on our live show.

The tool is called xtranormal. As it is stated on the xtranormal (2010) website, "xtranormal’s mission is to bring movie-making to the people." The concept is easy. You pick the number of actors, choose a scene and then start typing. If you are able to type a few words here and there you are able to make a movie. It is really as easy as that. If you want to get fancy you can start picking camera angles and motions for the actors. It is so easy a kid could do.

Xtranormal does have some adult content on it but this can not be viewed unless you have an account. As you create your movie you label, or rate, it as G, 13+ or 18+. I can see this being used in schools to help with language arts programs. Really the use is only limited by your imagination. Se the short movie I created as a test.

I did have some initial issue in the beginning with the site. I create a movie and went to go publish it. Then the issues began for me. The site would not let me create an account. I sent a quick email to support. By the next day I was up and running and was able to create my movie in less than 5 minute.

I highly recommend this tools. It is a cloud based tools so it can be accessed from anywhere. I am excited to use it on our show. I will try and let you know how it goes.

    So check it out. http://www.xtranormal.com

In this post I attempt making a video for this weeks favorite Web 2.0 tool.

    Enjoy!
